The cost of doing business seems to be, forever, on a steady climb upwards, which means firms need to be consistently driven towards new ways of controlling costs and increasing profitability. While this endeavor is ‘par for the course’ in the business of law, such an important undertaking doesn’t have to be an impossible task. Our panelists discuss growing opportunities in profit discovery through the utilization of business intelligence, data mining, benchmarking tools and technological techniques – all of which can increase a firm’s profit margin and ultimately save their clients’ money.

Luncheon and Keynote Presentation: Business Implications of the Public Cloud

Within an ever-expanding array of federal regulations around data security, firms are being forced to consider the serious implications of a data breach. While the cloud offers a tempting solution to burgeoning data storage management, fears of an attack from hackers, international hoodlums or virus-happy vigilantes cautions firms from entering into this realm of cyberspace. This keynote presentation addresses the pros and cons of a cloud and provides insight as to why the passing dark storms in cloud technology are succumbing to brighter and sunnier cyber-secure skies.

Building the 21st Century Lawyer

Few would argue that technological advancement has caused a major shift in the way the modern world conducts business. Law firms, cognizant of the unprecedented change around them, are continuing to ride the shifting tides by envisioning new ways of delivering high-quality results through improving the technological savvy of legal employees and acquiescing to client demands. This panel addresses what knowledge, skills and abilities new talent should possess in order to succeed in a 21st Century, tech-enabled legal industry.

The Situation Room: A Workshop on Crisis Management

One of the sad realities of the “new normal” is the escalating specter of terrorism-related crises in the workplace. Though not exclusively tethered to data privacy concerns or security breaches, a business executive’s ability to manage unforeseen trauma is an essential (and largely unspoken) part of the modern day job description. This closing workshop offers critical, practical, and experiential coaching on how to handle the unforeseen at a moment of supreme hardship. Participants will walk away with a clear understanding of what steps to take in order to protect the company’s human and business assets, as well as key techniques for better understanding terrorism’s ineffable vicissitudes.

Lucien Canton, Managing Director for Emergency Preparedness, TAL Global
