Once the Ink Dries: Measuring and Discerning Success in Acquisition and Integration

Even the most well crafted and carefully laid M&A deals can become unraveled without an effective integration strategy. How does one measure success in the integration process? What metrics and milestones are considered best practices when managing such a convoluted process? This opening panel will weave together leadership principles with due diligence reminders for successful deployment. We will also look closely at how the structuring of the merger or acquisition can ultimately pave the way toward seamless integration, or open the door to a slew of pitfalls.

Building and Fortifying an Integration Management Office

Building a sound and agile governance structure is a critical starting point in any successful acquisition. Considering the myriad variables contained within integration efforts—people, processes and systems—the need for a central, panoptic hub overseeing the general proceedings occurs vis-à-vis an expertly-run Integration Management Office (IMO). This session imparts key advice on building and staffing an IMO, defining the IMO’s objectives and strategic oversight, ensuring sufficient resources to maintain stability from day one to project completion, and establishing appropriate metrics and levers to monitor performance and compliance standards.

Cultural Integration & Talent Management Challenges in M&A

Cultural integration is a constant challenge for even the most seasoned business development professional. Once a merger has been formalized, the task of marrying two or more disparate entities can be incredibly daunting—if not potentially debilitating—and threaten to derail the project completely. What is more, even if a new cultural identity is successfully forged through seamless integration, the attendant specter of talent attrition looms large on the horizon. This discussion addresses two aforementioned pain points in M&A: building a healthy culture through effective leadership and protecting one’s investment by retaining and engaging key talent. Our veteran panel will share personal experiences and lessons learned while navigating this difficult process.
