The Perfect Pitch: From Coaching to Collaboration and Commitment (Breakout)

Marketing Partner Forum is pleased to announce the return of its highly popular “perfect pitch” workshop facilitated by a panel of esteemed general counsel. This year’s workshop asks practicing lawyers and law firm sales personnel to deliver an imaginary pitch to legal customers for cordial, constructive, real-time feedback. Attendees will depart with a thorough understanding of how collaborative client pitches can help win new business and bolster existing customer relationships.

    Moderator:
Paul McCurdy, Partner & Chair, Broker-Dealer practice group, Kelley Drye & Warren LLP

    Facilitators:
Michael D. Chartock, General Counsel, Gordon Brothers Group LLC
Alida Gualtieri, Director, Marketing & Business Development, Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP
Christopher Lenhart, Senior Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, US Bank

High Noon: A Pricing Negotiation Master Class (Breakout)

Budget predictability is of paramount concern for law firm clients. With continued financial pressures influencing clients’ decisions to bring more work in-house, many corporations are relying upon savvy pricing/sourcing officers to vet, select and manage outside counsel on large and small engagements. However, a major lament for many within this increasingly prominent coterie is the continued inability of client relationship partners and law firm business development personnel to adhere to budgetary proposals. This advanced pricing workshop will ask attendees to engage directly with legal customers in mock negotiation exercises. Participants will gain unique insight around strategic conversations, client pain points and much more within a collegial yet purposeful setting.

    Moderator:
Nancey Watson, President, NL Watson Consulting Inc.

    Facilitators:
Lucy Endel Bassli, Assistant General Counsel, Legal Operations and Contracting, Microsoft Corporation
Vincent J. Cordo, Jr., Global Sourcing Officer, Shell Oil Corporation
Justin Ergler, Director, Alternative Fee Intelligence and Analytics, GlaxoSmithKline
Brandon Pace, Senior Vice President, Legal, Lending Club

Learning from Failure and Success: Mastering Legal Project Management and Preventing Unsuccessful Client Engagements (Breakout)

Losing a key account to self-inflicted wounds or extraneous circumstances is never an easy pill to swallow. Law firms invest a tremendous amount of resources into meeting client expectations and delivering the best legal service possible. But sometimes, matters take longer, cost more or otherwise fail to meet client expectations. And law firms often find themselves having to ask difficult questions around what went wrong, why it occurred and how best to move forward as a business. This executive workshop takes a practical and methodical approach to mastering legal project management and coaching one’s firm through difficult or uncomfortable situations. Our facilitators will impart comprehensive advice on how to grow and improve from failure or build upon short-term success.

    Moderator:
Susan Lambreth, Principal, LawVision Group LLC

    Facilitators:
William B. Sailer, Senior Vice President, Legal Counsel, Qualcomm Inc.

Elevating the CMO Profile: Maximizing the Law Firm CMO’s Role in Strategic Planning (Breakout)

According to a recent ALM Intelligence report, many law firm administrative officers feel woefully underutilized when it comes to engaging and influencing the executive committee. Indeed, despite garnering considerably more prestige since the pre-2008 halcyon days, the law firm C-suite continues to suffer from the cultural malaise of a “non-lawyer”/lawyer binary which minimizes the meaningful contributions qualified business professionals can deliver to the firm. This roundtable analyzes several key findings from the ALM Intelligence report and begins a year-long dialogue around how law firm CMOs can maximize their impact in law firm strategic planning.

In this session, some of the nation’s top law firms explain how promoting gamification and a healthy competitive culture can lead to greater business development success. Participants will discover practical ways to engage their lawyers in collaborative games that energize the firm and help make a difference to the bottom line.

So You Want It Better and Faster?: Mastering Affordable, Editable, Agency-Level Design and Scalable Operational Support (Breakout)

Graphic design and other hands-on marketing needs are coming full circle. Solutions that deliver near-agency-level concepts in editable software that allow the completion of projects on-demand, are in demand. Let’s discuss best practices for when your team is beyond capacity, or has a one-off need that it cannot handle. Hear how peers, as well as a leading global investment management and research firm, are flexibly re-sizing and re-shaping their teams by working hand-in-hand with outside conceptual designers, proof-readers and editors in an art direction model, where designs are pitched, approved and work is completed through an integrated process.

Have Talent, Will Travel: Strategic Planning on Outsourced Operations - Is Marketing Next? (Breakout)

The digital economy has had a profound effect on the focus and role of marketers. In an age of fiscal scrutiny and tepid growth, the prospect of outsourced marketing is steadily gaining traction across industries. This strategic conversation examines the pros, cons, and ROI of moving market functions outside the firm. Our panelists will debate what an outsourced business plan might entail, as well as how current roles and responsibilities within most major firms might be affected by this emerging trend.

The Full-Service Client Partnership: Examining Strategic Alliances through Technology & Business Operations (Breakout)

Law firm/client relationships are constantly evolving. From concerns over matter management to tense pricing negotiations, client demands and expectations are as mercurial as the global economy itself—a headache to those firms ill-prepared to master a “full-service” client partnership. This breakout addresses the new rules of collaboration when it comes to winning and retaining legal customers. Our panelists will examine the key differentiators that define top firms and attract the ongoing loyalty of their clients.

The Road Not Taken: Assessing Competitive Threats to Firm Differentiation (Breakout)

As noted in the 2017 Report on the State of the Legal Market, 2016 was the seventh consecutive year of flat demand and falling productivity for law firms throughout the country. The current buyer’s market, replete with alternative legal service providers and private consultants, has forced law firms to shift their focus from growth to market differentiation in an ongoing fight for market share. This session asks attendees to assess their strategy for firm differentiation vis-à-vis analyses of competitive threats.

New Strategic Approaches to Selling Legal Services (Breakout)

This fast-paced panel will focus on selling legal services. We have all heard about how good client service and successful outcomes will help obtain more business. We get it. Whether it’s through an RFP process, a direct sales person at the firm, a procurement department, a reverse auction or a great sales pitch, the way in which clients buy legal services has changed. The panel will share opinions on what differentiates one sales approach from another; good sales pitches from bad sales pitches; how to pitch business once you are on a panel of selected outside counsel; which sales tools work and which ones do not and how to “get in the door” when you are just starting the relationship.

The Company We Keep: Mastering Client Collaboration in Relationship Management

When it comes to relationship management, many firms fail to consider the value client involvement can bring to key business processes such as succession planning or client team transitioning. This panel examines customer motivations and the underlying business case for inextricable collaboration between law firms and their most valued clients.

A Call to Action: Collaborative Business Development Strategy in the C-Suite (Breakout)

Collaboration can be a difficult exercise for law firm executives. On the surface, operational, financial, or technological expertise often rests within specific business silos with little to zero overlap. In truth, collaborative leadership across these areas and with other key stakeholders has proven tantamount to law firms’ overall ability to adapt. Sales and marketing is no exception. It too requires collaborative focus among C-suite colleagues in often more nuanced ways than first imagined. This focused conversation provides a case study and strategic blueprint for engaging one’s peers across the C-suite. Attendees will depart with several ideas on how to improve firm profitability and revenue through principles of collaborative leadership.

Client Collaboration in the Business Development & Marketing Process: Clients Tell All (Breakout)

Content marketing has become the go-to marketing strategy for law firms throughout the AmLaw 200. Luncheon CLE programs, client bulletins, networking receptions, even tickets to sporting events or theater are routinely offered as building blocks in the law firm-client relationship. However, not every client appreciates such staid presentations. Indeed, some would argue that the very thought of attending yet another law firm-sponsored program makes having a root canal an attractive proposition. This roundtable offers feedback about the best and highest-value events sponsored or produced by law firms. Our panel will deliver novel insights into how firms can directly involve their clients in business development efforts and add sizzle to their content marketing.
