Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel
Sheila M. Murphy is a Vice President and Associate General Counsel at MetLife. She leads the Distribution and Products Unit where she provides litigation support and advice to the Retail Group of the Americas. Sheila’s focus is on disputes relating to the sale, suitability or performance of life insurance products, annuities and investments and matters arising from alleged sales of unauthorized products and investments.
In addition, to her litigation responsibilities, Sheila has assumed leadership roles across all of MetLife. She serves on the Advisory Board to MetLife’s Women’s Business Network, the Legal Affairs IT Governance Committee, and co-chairs the Management Development Committee of Legal Affairs Academy. She was previously a member of the Retention and Development Subcommittee of the Diversity Committee and is also a mentor in the Legal Affairs Mentoring Program. Sheila is a member of the National Association of Women Lawyers, where she participates in its International Committee and is chair of the Logistics Subcommittee of the General Counsel Institute Committee.
Because of her commitment to nurturing other women in business, in 2010, Sheila was presented with the Highest Leaf Award from the Women’s Venture Fund. In 2011, she was named a Most Influential Irish Woman by the Irish Voice.
Sheila is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she worked on the Comparative Labor Law Journal and the School of Management at the State University of New York at Binghamton where she graduated magna cum laude. Prior to joining MetLife, Sheila was a litigation associate at the law firm of Thacher Proffitt & Wood. Her practice focused on complex financial litigation.
